Die Zeit zerrinnt wie Sand im Beton verschwindet: Sind seit Wreckless Eric's letztem Inselbesuch wirklich schon über 11 Jahre die wunderblaue Mississihl runter geflossen?

Am 27. Oktober 2013 starb Lou Reed, der in seiner allerletzten Radio-Show Wreckless Eric's Song «The Cash» spielte und ihn «magnificent» nannte. Am 1. Dezember 2014 spielte Eric solo auf den Inselbühnenplanken – unvergesslich auch die Insel-Performances mit seiner bezaubernden Ehefrau Amy Rigby.

Der 1954 als Eric Goulden in Newhaven, East Sussex, geborene Wreckless Eric ist auch mit 71 Jährchen – nach bald einem halben Jahrhundert Bühnenkarriere und auf seiner Website gelisteten 20 Albümern – ein hin- & mitreissender Performer. 1977 erschien auf Stiff Records (Ian Dury, Madness, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe) die Debüt-Single «Whole Wide World//Semaphore Signals», produziert von Nick Lowe (zudem am Bass, Ian Dury an den Drums) und wurde zum Welt-Hit. Mr. Cockney kreuzte unverblümt Pop mit Punk und schmiss eine saftige Prise 50er-Sensibilität dazu. Nach Jahren in Frankreich und einigen Spex-Lieblingsalben – zet Be «The Donovan of Trash» – in den Niederungen des disfunktionalen, sprich: alternativen, Erfolgs veröffentlichte Eric 2004 seine Autobiografie Eric Goulden: A Dysfunctional Success. The Wreckless Eric Manual (written by the author). Zu seinem 70sten hat der deutsche Ventil Verlag das vom Musiker und Autor überarbeitete Buch neu aufgelegt – im englischen Original: Eric Goulden: A Dysfunctional Success. The Wreckless Eric Manual. Die selbstironische Autobiografie. In original englischer Sprache. Ventil Verlag, Mainz 2024.

Der Unermüdliche ist immer noch unterwegs und arbeitete mit oder wurde gecovert von: The Proclaimers, Yo La Tengo, The Blockheads (The Lightning Seeds, Holly Golightly, Cliff Richard, The Monkees, Ian Hunter, Die Toten Hosen and Two Lone Swordsmen, um nur einige zu nennen. Seinen Song «Whole Wide World» interpretiert Will Ferrell im Marc Foster-Film «Stranger than Fiction» (2006) mit Akustikgitarre interpretiert und ist Teil des Soundtracks. Fire Records gibt nach und nach alle seine Alben neu heraus. I also made an album – England Screaming.

But first I rebuilt my recording studio. I worked every day until I couldn’t stand up anymore. Rebuilt a floor, soundproofed walls, ran cables, wired in equipment... Actually our friend Rick, the local Norfolk builder form Kansas, rebuilt the floor but I watched and gave helpful advice…

When I was finished with that I dug out the tracks I had hastily recorded before the move with my friend and neighbour Sam Shepherd playing drums, and set about making them into an album.

There was a deadline, and again I worked every day until I was incapable of thinking, standing, sitting or staying awake. My eyes were burned by computer screens. And then it was finished and I anguished about the cover with my friend Karen Hall, my surrogate sister, who did the technical stuff and argued about some of my choices, including the randomness of my punctuation and the scrappiness of my cut outs (more like a Jackie annual than a high class graphic). And then it was done and nothing matched the guidelines, so it was tweaked and adjusted until everything fit, and we anguished together late at night on the phone, me and Karen being fearful that they’d got us all wrong.

But they hadn’t. And one day the product arrived (more boxes) – LPs and CDs – and they looked just right so I braced myself and made some videos. Hour by hour…the progress was slow, clipping and flickering at a rate of fifteen seconds a day.

I burned two hard drives and both my eyes. I made three full length videos of three of the tunes. I did it all sitting at the kitchen table. I made several short videos too, promoting my gigs in support of the album, promoting the album ahead of release. The record company were pleased – there were so many orders that they had to repress the LP ahead of release. I posted my videos all over Facebook and Instagram and worried that people were getting thoroughly sick of me. I steadied myself for the complaints that were sure to come:
