+Long Tall Jefferson
With their new video, out July 27 and which has received over 8000 views already, the two are surely skateboarding the charts to fame. ‘Easy does it’ is what you might take away from their efforts at their surface. Not necessarily just from their single «Wenn du mir glaubst» (If you believe me) from their new album «Cheers!» but from their work across the board so far. But in regard to their lyrics, there’s a caveat: Every song tells a story of every-day Swiss life. «The Good Life» for instance describes a privileged Mr. and Mrs. Suisse drowning in way too much of it. Life in the schizoid world of a thousandandtwo possibilities. In a world that’s scary. Fear. Instead of living our dreams we sit paralyzed and fall for excessive consumption resulting in only fake satisfaction.» Maybe mental masturbation pure if you believe there’s a glut of messages but very few answers these days. But even if your favorite song has always been «Wooly Bully» you gotta admit the two say what they mean and mean what they say. The heart sings one thing, the mind says another. Through the remarkable talent of this duo, the result is rebellious and melancholic, subtly disturbing and simultaneously exhilarating. Still, there are often no happy endings to their tunes because there simply aren’t any.
Ultimately, Nora Steiner and Madlaina Pollina seduce you with their sound and the way their voices meld which is something to experience. They rock your boat with indie pop folk that flows as easy and lovely as our river, exalted by gentle acoustic surf guitar and analog sequences. And then sudden blazing interludes that signal stormy weather. Five of their songs on «Cheers!» (you get the irony) are in German, four in English and one piece is in dialect, «Herz vorus id Wand» (With Heart Straight into the Wall), urging us to follow our feelings.
