Time flies when you’re having fun

oh what a night...
Jolly & The Flytrap
By golly Miss Molly, they’re rolling into their 30th year. Happy to remind you that some of that mountain energy was blown off many times before right here off our boards.

With an a encore upon us. Rethorically «Goemmer? - Are we going?» is how they traditionally kick-start their gigs. But first «How long can a Swiss Band survive this long?» asked Die Zeit from Hamburg incredulously. Maybe the explanation’s in the old adage «Time flies when you’re having fun». Yes, wives and kids are sprinkled throughout the six to eight members’ personal history, but it’s no surprise that for the all-male musicians of this band the band always comes first. Music comes first.  The Jolly have also been taking it slow with their output, nice and easy, no rush there. Their 350 or so live concerts and four albums in all these years so far seem modest by comparison to other groups. Maybe that’s one of the reason for their popularity: «If nothing new comes to mind we leave things alone». Or «In Switzerland it’s possible to function as a band if you’re not going for a breakthrough». Whoa – but refreshingly candid, just like their music. Sly fatalism as the basis for success. Jolly & The Flytrap not only swears by it. The excel with it.

Without pretension they call their stuff global rock’n’roll that includes electric polkas and songs in dialect as well as in English, French and Spanish and collaborations with the Engelberg Blasmusik, the mountain village where they originally descended from. But there’s intelligence here and you can hear it throughout their manifold and eclectic oeuvre, punctuated with promising  song titles like «Tous ce que vous voulez». It’s that spirit that made them one of the most popular rocking dance band in a culturally tough and stony landscape in a market this small.

«Goemmer?»
