Celebrate with blood-pumping Colombian Cumbia, Rumba and Ranchera, indie-Mambo, Merengue and Mariachi, sonidos that are like a simmering meltdown «fed trough a psychedelic prism» (Anastasia Tsioulcas, NPR). Sergio Mendoza and his combustible Orkesta from Tucson, Arizona are dusting off clasicoestilos ycantantes, like traditional mezcal poured into a brand new shiny bottle. «Vamos a Guarachar!», let’s take it to street, is their rebel yell and title of their latest CD. It’ll be with them on our stage and with all this emotion rushing on to you, no wall there, you’ll also be swayed by some of the most exquisitely played instruments this side of the Pecos. This punky Latin band was formed in a tribute to Cuban king Perez-Prado and lider and producer Mendoza on voice and multiple instruments has been fine tuning his art and enriching it with his cohorts who have some of the more illustrious names in Southwestern contemporary music, like Devotchka, Calexico and Giant Sand. And previously issued rebel rousing albums like their first «Traicionera» and «Mambo Mexicano!» started the revolution which Calexico frontman Joey Burns with uncanny premonition called «Just the tip of the iceberg».
The whole iceberg is floating into the last rebel stronghold on the languorous Mississihl. Get ready for your own meltdown.
«Sergio Mendoza is probably my favorite musician of this time. He has the cumbia and mambo in his DNA, but he has the power to make it sound like today. His Orkesta is as punk as the Sex Pistols and as violent as Perez-Prado» – Camilo Lara, Mexican Institute of Sound
