12 new songs are featured on this disc and they were recorded with the complete Nick Lowe back-up band (needless to say, Nick loved her work when they toured together): Geraint Watson on keyboard, Matt Radford on upright bass, Robert Trehern on drums, Martin Winning on clarinet and sax and Gregory Townson on guitar. Angie Pollock (The Lightning Seeds, Goldfrapp) lent her voice to backup vocals and the producers were the talented Neil Brockbank and Robert Treffern.
What's most impressive about Eleni and her work is her ability to metamorphose, to transform seemingly innocuous little tales into wonderful song miniatures while demonstrating her command of the whole registry of sound and lyrical forms of expression. With her, and her sometimes sweetly dark ways, you can experience an artist who's found her niche and has fully arrived. She's perfectly at ease, but also in a bittersweet and firm way she doesn't hesitate to remind, the in this case weasly, Barack Obama of his broken promise: «The president said he'd close the jail, 'cause it's the right thing to do, but the president didn't close the jail like he promised to.» Do they ever, sorry to say.
«I didn't fly a kite for thirty years. Then I had kids and all of a sudden we were flying kites all the time. It's such a simple, fun thing to do but along the way you forget.» To help you remember, look for a wavering kite way above el Lokal when you get here.
