oh what a night...
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (USA)
Let's be real: You're lucky to be alive. You're lucky to be alive and living in ZH. You're lucky to be alive and living in ZH and blindly know your way to the last island left. You're lucky to be alive and living in ZH and blindly know your way to the last island left where at our venerable El Lokal you'll get to see and hear one of today's true music masters, Bonnie Prince Billie. Not once but twice in two days, you lucky shmuck.
However, it isn't luck that brings him back to us but his clear preference for small venues over super bowls. In fact, in an interview with Hanspeter 'Duesi' Kuenzler for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. (which you might be lucky enough to remember), he said: «One of the soundbites that's forever imprinted in my brain, went: Wendy? Yes, Lisa? Is the water warm? Yes, Lisa. Shall we...? (sings the tune). That went down during my first concert with Prince on the 'Purple Rain' tour in Lexington, Kentucky. But it was also the first concert after which I realised that gigs in big venues are not as cool as what they're made out to be. Too many people. and the stage too far from them. The sound not nearly what it is at home. Yes, it was an impressive, gigantic arena show and Prince was at the height of his success but if someone would approach me with this kind of gig, honestly, I'd have to ask why? I'm not getting it.»
Well, you thirsting but fortunate souls, the wait's over and our inimitable friend and his art are back. His music once again will speak louder than his words (or ours), speaking direct and personal and right to you and of course you already know, seeing and hearing him is believing. Full of depth, variation and surprises, it's a miracle and our luck - or his? that he still keeps creative control over his creations. His latest is «The Marble Downs» (2012, with the scottish band Trembling Bells) and according to Paul Weller of Rolling Stone, it transcendence with ideas in words and sound. Fragile, beautiful, intimate, timeless, genial and yes, by gosh, funny.
Even if you kicked the bucket the day after these two shows you'll consider yourself lucky to have been so lucky to still have been alive for these two nights. No need to check your horoscope, for sure it'll be a time when the stars will align and shine bright and transiting lucky Jupiter we'll be horny Venus, or the other way around. But please, don't push it and show up late or worse, neglect to make that call. Because you might just run out of luck.
