oh what a night...
Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells (SCO)
A melancholic quest presenting songs about love, weltschmerz, football, drink and other existential goodies ...
«A match made in heaven» enthused The Sunday Times. And in fact, Aidan Moffat did find in Bill Wells his alter ego and perfect musical mate, who's been missing ever since he disbanded Arab Strap. The band he named after a pleasure enhancing cockring sextoy.
And your pleasure enhancement will be to see what these two essentially experimental jazz artists and their music are all about. Wells, on piano and bass is perfectly backing up Moffat in his melancholic quest to present songs about love, weltschmerz, football, drink and other existential goodies. And he'll be gunning his ribald lyrics at your ears, demanding rapt attention. Creating music that the stout mayor of Falkirk labeled a disgrace. There you have it. But that didn't diminish our local heroes popularity (quite the opposite as it is so often happily the case).
Their sound's going back to Aidan's days with Arab Strap and to Bill's musical past when he was leading a jazzpop octett (while arranging for The Pastels and Isobel Cambell). Going forward now and if you listen closely, you'll even hear a little Robert Wyatt sprinkled in. Yes, that man.
Of course, our Two had earlier collaborated in 2003 under Arab Strap (you're now not ever forgetting that name, are you!?), penning the legendary and poetic album «Monday at the Hug & Pint». Their current work is observantly titled «Everything's Getting Older» and it's encompassingly sad at times, turbulent and will grab you where it matters, wherever that is with you. An appearence is also made by the piece «Copper Top», not referring to a particular hairstyle but to a once brillant red copper roof now oxydised by old age and leading Bill to muse about the passing of time, things getting older. «Birth, love and death are the only reasons to get dressed up for».
Yep, we agree but shout back in unison: «But life's still worth dying for!» And so is great music and forever and ever and ergo, we invite you over to our ultimate island for a different kind of saturday night fever. Got it? No? Then let's be perfectly clear: Bring your own sextoy, in human shape or whatever form enticing to you. For an evening of sensual, emotional enhancement and wonderful musical pleasure.
And no, Zurich isn't Falkirk. Let's make cocky Aidan & Bill honorary mayors.
