Alain Croubalian
Alain and his band Dead Brothers were the first band ever to play El Lokal some 20 years ago and were instrumental in setting things in motion for what was to come.

«I was born of Armenian roots in Montreal, grew up in Geneva where I still live. Home also is Cairo, Berlin, Hamburg and Los Angeles and I’ve been with bands like Les Maniacs, Maniac vs. Sharkiat (an Egyptian band, their memorable clash gave birth to the seminal album “Don’t Climb The Pyramids) plus Lazy Cowgirls and Dead Brothers». But it’s the highly original and exuberant Dead Brothers where Alain perhaps left his biggest indentation. The band’s been called «The one and only funeral trash band», which has to be one reason why they were consistently kept out of the Eurovision contest.

Tonight, this quirky multi-instrumentalist (dobro guitar, banjo, piano, bass. voice, megaphone) will dominate the stage by himself. «I’ll play solo, I haven’t decided what… out of the sewing box, out of the swing box, out of every box... 40 years of rock’n’roll». He’d done it previously right here as Cowboy Fantome for the world premiere of «The Plains», an album that featured words by Forke Burke, lyricist and filmmaker Marcus Aurelius Littler, and the man himself. Accompanied by an alternatively soothing and grainy voice and supported mainly by a searching, probing piano that rides above a droning wall of sound. In a collection of songs that features lyrics that touch your mind and play with your heart. Stylistically, the songs frequently have folklore roots, origins that reach back for generations if not centuries, and arrive at an amalgam of rock, rockabilly, chanson, and punk, melting with gypsy folk and voodoo blues and whatever Alain’s searching comes up with. Dark and light, earth and universe, poetry and philosophy, intellect and emotion, love and loneliness, it’s a sound to die for.

El Lokal, playing since 1.8.2000. Thank you for your patronage.
