C.W. Stoneking (solo)
«C.W. Stoneking is an artist for whom «unexpected» is probably the default setting. How else to describe such a fine purveyor of American roots music….

… who also happens to be a towering, youthful-faced white Australian man? He surprises the first-time listener, throws curveballs at long-time listeners and everything he does contains at least some background level of bafflement for all involved.» (Jim Hickson on cwstoneking.com)

Pipe smoking Bluesman C.W. baffles with his skills, mainly on the electric guitar, and the way he gets his vocal cords to work in a cocksure blend of traditional styles. He is the blues, 1920’s blues at that, but he doesn’t stop there: Exploring the increasingly porous borders between genres, he’s opened his big arms to New Orleans jazz, jug band music, hokum, country and calypso right where it’s all happening and tying all the different yarns together. C.W. has always explored the musical mysteries of the Louisiana Deep South, just more so now: He ventured into jump jive, classic rock’n’roll and gospel which are now peppering his home-cooked musical jambalaya (Jambalaya, crawfish pie and fillet gumbo / for tonight I’m a-gonna see ma cher a-mio / pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-o / son of a gun we’ll have big fun on the bayou). C.W. would love to do an album with Kanye West he explains because he believes he can fuse Kanye’s rhythmic blends with his own good taste.

There’s a Southern elegance to Gentleman C.W. Stoneking, what with his customary white linen suit sometimes topped off with a screaming bow tie. He’s traveled the world, from Egypt to the Delta, to the island of Trinidad, assisting a witch doctor in New Orleans, getting drunk and promptly shipwrecked crossing over to Gabon and the Congo. Far-reaching, he has experienced the planet in all its beauty and all its foibles. His current album is «Gon’Bogaloo», he can also be heard on Jack White’s recent album «Boarding House Reach» (2019) as well. Time to dance the boogaloo.

C.W. Stoneking, live at El Lokal. He’s got the blues in his heart and voodoo in his fingers.
