Born and bred near Dublin, her thespian credentials are something to behold besides making for a commanding presence on any stage. Among them are her scene-stealing appearances in tv series, playing Catherine of Aragon of The Tudors (2007 – 2010), Vera Bates of Downtown Abbey (2011), Siobhan Sadler of Orphan Black (2013 – 2017, winner of Canadian Screen Award for best supporting actress «I think everybody likes to play the villain. They’re much more interesting characters») and this year’s Outlander. Add to that roles in acclaimed movies like The Commitments (1991) and The Conjuring 2 and Sing Street (both 2016), with a slew of roles in between.
Well versed in alternative folk, Appalachian folk, rock and hip-hop, singer-songwriter of and for the people, Maria excels with earthy lyrics and a crystal clear voice and she’ll be supported by the elegant guitar and instrumentalizations by her husband Kieran. Their current studio album, following 8 previous cd releases, is «Maria Doyle Kennedy» (2017). A live version with 18 songs was recorded here at El Lokal just about a year ago and it got distribution by their own label, Mermaid Records. (At the end of that Swiss tour she quipped that «they had to go home now to wash socks because there weren’t any clean ones left».
Singer and actress Maria Doyle Kennedy is an all-around artistic powerhouse. Recognized in her country with the unofficial title of one of «Ireland’s most prolific artists and entertainers»,
she’s added her name to a long list of excellence in the arts from the Emerald Isle. Come to think of it, it’s amazing that a country of half the population of Switzerland has given birth to not only her but to U2, Sinead O’Connor, Van Morrison, The Cranberries, The Pogues, The Mekons, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Imelda May, and so many others.
Live at El Lokal, Maria Doyle Kennedy & Kieran Kennedy. It all goes back to Ireland.
