38 years old Montreal born singer-songwriter and guitarist Jesse Marchant currently lives in New York City where upstate he once spent three years mostly in solitude to hone and perfect songs he had written earlier while living on the Westcoast. This drive for perfection is still with him deep in his DNA. Only more so, it’s now enhanced by his personal experiences and tribulations. He’ll present you with a meticulous and careful crafted union of sound and lyrics through atmospheric arrangements, songs of an emotion and depth that are nothing short of a cinematic experience for the listener. His voice can be soft and gentle in his unaffected baritone supported by his acoustic guitar but he’s also a rocker at heart in the vein of Nick Drake, Neil Young, and Thom Yorke. In his artistic past, Jesse’s been supporting acts like Other Lives, Sondre Lerche, Heartless Bastards, Damien Jurado a.o. and he has shared the stage with fellow singer-songwriters Elvis Perkins and St. Vincent.
Jesse’s debut was «Not Even in July» (2010) for which the title song came with a video by Brody Baker that showed strewn lawn chairs, sunsets and searching through a dark forest. Next came «Stray Ashes» (2012), «Jesse Marchant» (2014). His latest album is a gem titled «Illusion of Love». It’s been described as his heartfelt prayer for hope in a world that has too little. Yet in the title track, he challenges with the inquisitive «Who do you love»? but arrives in a different way: «Who you gonna tell who to love / When everyone just tryin’ to feel alright / Since I was a kid / I had fought a darkness I would never shake.» What do you know, the song might just be the prettiest on the entire album.
The enigma Jesse Marchant. He’s a rising star in the U.S. and Canada, more so than in Europe. It’s up to you to change that.
