But that’s just part of it. Due to their open door policy, this by concept modular band embraces talented musicians to sit in with their contributions. Which opens the channels to the unexpected, the mother of improvisation. It’s when, not if, that this Greek volcano will erupt and spew fire in both recording and live sessions. Meaning meandering operatic exploits and deliberate unpredictability, they’re spotlighting musical footprints by Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly’s In-a-gadda-da-Vida, California 60’s/70’s psychedelia and Terry Riley, Sun Ra and Albert Ayler at any given night while also launching some hair-raising vocals. Catch this quintessential live band in its manic exploration of the endless possibilities of sound and hear traces from that great creative era in this groups astonishing instrumental and vocal assault. More fertile expansion went down due to jamming with Budos Band, Preoccupations (ex- Vietcong), Moon Duo, Underground Youth and The Weekend. Chickn’s self-titled debut album was released in late 2016 by Inner Ear.
Their newest is «Wowsers!» which has been created in their aforementioned modus operandi. So what went into it? Perhaps the records the musicians were spinning while laying down their tracks can give a clue: Stooges/Raw Power, Annette Peacock/ I’m the One, Can/Delay 1968, David Bowie/The Man who sold the World, Grateful Dead/Live Europe ’72, Albert Ayler/Bells, Sun Ra/The Numbians of Plutonia, Captain Beefheart/Bluejeans and Moonbeams, Max Roach/We Insist!, Suzanne Ciani/Buchla Concerts 1975, Arleta/Exi Meres, Tyler the Creator/Flower Boy, Michael Rother/Fernwaerme, Ariel Pink/Tribute to Bobby Jameson, T.Rex/Electric Warrior, Red Crayola/The Parable of Arable Land, Alice Coltrane/Turiya Sings. Expect to hear Angelos Krallis, Evangelos Aslamides and Pantellis Karasevadas but leave some room here for improvisation… Anyways, you’d do yourself a favor by hearing them before their terrific big sound and presence electrifies the stadiums.
PACIFIC STAR Revivalist, wild trio from Zurich that sometimes features visually eye-popping background projections and musically traffics in mind numbing Americana, 80’s narcotic, psychedelic doom boogie, droning blues and rock covers, injecting all of it with their instrumental dexterity and massive melodic articulations. And if you wanted to know, yes, these badasses do come up with their own stuff just the same, notably with «Alabama Rail Man» and the atomic «Doom». Hipsters, hold on to your hats, beards and minds.
What a wild, romping night at El Lokal. For those who ever felt sad when you learnt that Alice Cooper plays golf.
