An in-your-kisser message

oh what a night...
Papst & Abstinenzler
They’re irascible, edgy, juvenile, sentimental, confrontational, repugnant, poetic, crude, cynical. And fiendishly delightful.

Just in case you can’t fully understand their regional linguistics. Papst & Abstinenzler (Pope & Teetotaler) is a band from Schaffhausen, Winterthur and Zurich, that grey triangle of serious foggy winter depression which might give a clue in explaining their state of mind. Their thing is rock with a hug to chansons, 60s pop and stoic krautrock and while excellent it doesn’t sound that different really. But it does slyly support their in-your-kisser messages which is their sly way to lull you. Because what really is getting their goat galloping is attacking the conventionality of Swiss mainstream music, admittedly a rather large target, which they vehemently blast against and dryly observe that «Musig us de Schwiiz isch wie drue Taeg alts Brot / «Music from Switzerland is like three days old bread».

Stale in other words, but something that could not be said about this band. And sitting on their favorite barstools they happily keep punching the bag even more and are making friends by chastising some of the perpetrators with «Scheiss auf eure Mundartmusik, ihr Wichsers!» / «Screw your dialect music, you wankers!» And they’re not shy in expressing a high opinion of their own work either. Take their praise for their new album «…und, Leute, I shit you not, es ist ein gutes, ein richtig gutes Album von Papst & Abstinenzler» / «and, folks, I shit you not, it’s a good, a really good album». The title is «Bar ad Schnore» which we think could mean somewhat cryptically «A few in the snout». There you have it where it hurts and song titles like «Schwarzi Nacht» / «Black Night» or «Bahnhof ohni Gleis» / «Train station without Rails» promise more highlights.

Live at El Lokal are Juerg «Odi» Odermatt (vocals, acoustic guitar, texts), Nico Feer (bass, vocals), Tiziano Morinelli (e- & slide guitar), Martin «Fisch» Fischer (drums & percussion). Don’t be a wanker, this band really does need your support.
