In this solo work, Howe Gelb, indie desert rocker and founder and leader of Giant Sand finally succumbed to his long-held fascination and love for words, like how they butt against or flow and embrace each other. Clearly audible also is his respect and admiration for the art of the classic American Songbook writers and musicians of yore and the simplicity, even innocence, inherited in their timeless creations. «At the core of the genre» he muses in an interview «is the separation of the heart and the mind, it’s these two forces that are at work. One’s telling you practical matters and the other is overwhelming you with the unexplainable. The genre of piano standard song construction isn’t available anymore and nobody has done it anymore for quite some time. It was kind of beguiling for me, the melody and the counter melody, the large piano chords. This album was done in a way I haven’t done any other of my albums. The elements are simple: It’s just piano, vocals and upright bass and a small trap kit. Yes, I challenged myself for quite some time to look into what makes up a piano standard and see whether I could write one.» Or twelve.
«It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future» said that famous funny ball player. It’s easy to make predictions about Howe Gelb’s «Future Standards». It’s here to stay because it’s his kind of music.
