Exotic and explosive

oh what a night...
Jambinai
With over a million procedures a year, Gangnam, Seoul in South Korea is the cosmetic surgery capital of the world. Tonight’s band promises a different kind of beauty lift.

Kim Bo-mi, Lee II-woo and Sim Eun-yong, two girls and a guy are the core of this unusual group which often expands with additional musicians for their tours. Progressive post-rock Jambinai’s symbiosis of folk Korean with ambient psychedelic electronica is featuring instruments like the piri, a traditional bamboo flute, the fiddle-like haegum and the hyeongeum (literally «black zither») which are fusing with contemporary electronica. Hypnotic, ancient-sounding meditative passages are attacked and overtaken by distorted and furious interludes of all-out mental metal rock. Exotic and explosive and alternatively inviting contemplation, the intricate compositions slowly and persistently seduce you with a web of enrapturing beauty without offering an easy way out. «We’re darker than other Korean bands» says their principal writer Lee, which sounds like an understatement to us.

The group made a sensational appearance at this year’s Paleo festival in Nyon and fRoots marveled that they’re «One of the best live-acts on the planet». The label Bella Union, the stable for acts like Fleet Foxes, Midlake, Melissa Nadler, Beach House and John Grant, knew what was up and signed them. Before their visit here at el Lokal, the group could be heard in Melbourne and Santiago de Chile in February. The band members were all students of traditional Korean music, the band’s been together for only a few years, their debut album «Difference» earned them the prestigious award for Best Korean Crossover Album of 2013. Their second album’s titled «A Hermitage» and it was named «Best Album of 2016» by Uncut and Musikexpress topped that with ***** (5!)  stars. The French cult station Arte Radio: «Far from all K-Pop clichés, Jambinai offers living proof that cool rock can be based and derived from traditional instruments. The band successfully mixes modern rock and furious punk with the music of their ancestors. Their sound, arranged between meditative quiet interludes and furious sonic storms remind of Tortoise and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.»

Jambinai from South Korea.  Cosmetic surgery for the heart and mind. You haven’t experienced anything like it.
