This exquisite franco-feminine singer-songwriter was born in Cherbourg (anybody remember the parapluies from there?) and currently lives in Brussels (that’s the city some Swiss pretend doesn’t exist). Blessed with a magnificient voice, her genre is broadly put, Le chanson nouvelle. But Françoiz songs reach higher and further and triphop with a distinctive groove to them. Brought to her discerning level through the influence of her artistic collaborator, Portishead guitarist and sound magician Adrien Utleytut.
«With ZOO» the beautiful woman says «I wanted to tell about the animals that are inside us, the cat on the neck (in Germany they say ‘a frog in the throat’), the Elephant on your back and the spider inside the head which stands for insanity. Because perhaps we should discover more about our animalistic, say instinctive side, we live in a world that’s too rational, too intent on trying to make sense.» No easy feat to try to lift us out of our conundrum but Franzoiz Breut is on to something. Bands like the Go-Betweens, Tindersticks, Calexico, Herman Düne, Portishead and The Walkabouts have been longtime admirers of her art ever since her eponymous «Françoiz Breut» from ’97 and were fascinated by here moody, seductive and multi-faceted voice. The Walkabouts recorded her «Everyone Kisses A Stranger», Calexico did covers of «Ma Colere» and «Si Tu Disais» and Howe Gelb, ever the romantic, dedicated the song «Letter To Francoise» to her.
This mercurial chanteuse is also a talented and published illustrator. On her first album her then boyfriend, French popstar Dominique, wrote the lyrics. Since then it all flows out of her, the words, the voice, the joy of singing, the animals she sings about and wants you to release. Live and in your own animal house magnifique tonight.
