Astronauts (UK)
Astronauts is the solo brainbaby of Dan Carney, formerly of the British alternative folk band Dark Captain.

With that crew this captain sailed way beyond East London and whipped up a typhoon with the iTunes US single of the week and a bouquet of «Best Album of the Year» awards. Solo now and with the debut single «Skydive» he zoomed straight into uncharted regions of the musical universe with a cascading and smooth but foreboding mix of gnarly sonic assaults generated by his acoustic guitar. Electronic beats and wondrous song structures vaulted his music further into space and the songs tell about escaping social norms and are celebrating the infinite in its possibilities. And all of it conceived with nary a splash of Jameson.

It’s that single «Skydive» that released a viral streaming sensation for which no inoculation has yet been discovered: On the new music blog Hype Machine the tune was tops within a week and it received over 120’000 plays on Soundcloud. It generated generous airplay on both sides of the pond and the outer reaches of the universe (You’re not alone). The album «Hollow Ponds» from 2014 fuses mellow melancholia, psycho folk dynamics with bubbly electronic textures all topped with Dan’s often unhinged assaults by guitar. And it’s a work that doesn’t shy away from the exposure of a dark and claustrophobic world.

This serious artist’s pastimes are fatherhood, reading, writing and hiking. And if you don’t believe this after listening to his music – well, don’t.
