oh what a night...
The Dodos (USA)
You may know the Dodo is a bird that hasn't laid an egg since 1691, mainly on account of having been extinct since then. Unlike our guests tonite of the same name, who's latest egg is titled «Carrier» (2013) and which was hatched in their hometown of San Francisco.
While the old bird Dodo made it into «Alice in Wonderland», the two-man* band Dodo made it on to David Letterman. And that was entirely because of nothing but their music: One half of the band, Logan Kroeber, studied Westafrican drumming that led him even to Progressive Metal and now together with the other half, guitarist Meric Long, Dodo excels in performing a near extinct, scrambled but immensely beautiful concoction of Indierock, Pop and Psychedelic Folk. Which earned them invitations to spread their mighty wings with Les Savy Fav, Wovenhand, Akron Family and Peter And The Wolf. Because unlike the hapless, original Dodo, this bird can fly and tonight, they want you to fly with them.

Strangely, they might be the first band to have plugged in with the purpose of rocking less. Inverted chords, string buzz, looping and distortion pedals - it's all there. But to them, conventional song structures are for the birds. Their sonic approach is as spontaneous and soaring as free flight and results in an adventurous, experimental sound that has no equal, it rises up into the sky in calm, quiet meditations, it even gets lost in silence and threatens to never come down. «If this love comes unto me / I'm with it / I'm with it». Are you with us tonite, birdwatchers?

*Prior to the current line-up, Chris Reimer was an integral member of the band. His unexpected passing in 2012 was a huge loss but his legacy left an undeniable impact on the current band. He's still with them as a spiritual and musical inspiration. : «Chris was a huge influence on the way I think about guitar, songwriting and music in general» (Meric Long)
