oh what a night...
Jeffrey Lewis & The Rain (USA)
The New York-born Jeffrey leads a double life but one that's single-mindedly creative: That of a musician and a comic artist or cartoonist, if you will, both obviously greatly compatible inside the same person. 21st Century Schizoid Man?
Nope, but still more than a little whacky.
He's a raconteur of tragic-comic tales as well as brilliant musician and performer of Garage Blues and Folk-Rock and he's a singer and songwriter and also pens film scores and is the creator of an Obama illustrated bio and  blogs for the NY Times. And our renaissance man has been at the helm of bands like JL & The Creeping Brains, JL & The Jitters, JL & The Jackals, JL & The Junkyard, JL & The Peter Stampfel Band and currently, JL & The Rain.
His music encompasses contemplative Alternative Folk, noisy Garage Rock and abstract Soundscapes. His touring diary is pretty impressive: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Devendra Banhart, Devo, Black Dice, Thurston Moore, The Fall, The Vaselines, Beth Orton, Frank Black, The Fiery Furnaces, Daniel Johnston, Scout Niblett, The Mountain Goats, The Moldy Peaches, Cornershop, The Cribs, Dr. Dog, Kimya Dawson, Adam Green, Akron Family, Roky Erickson, Au Revoir Simone....Jeff, did we miss anybody?
In 2001, he signed with Rough Trade, created seven great albums with them of which «A Turn In The Dream Songs» is his latest. Here he got support from Franic Wave Pictures Rozycki on mandolin and Johnny Flynn's band, The Sussex Wit, which features JL's longtime drummer Franic David Beauchamp as well as members of Dr.Dog, The Vaselines, Au Revoir Simone, Misty's Big Adventure and Schervon! The album was recorded in Manchester, UK where fakery is verboten and Pro-Tools got a red card for life. All in all, a soulful piece that's descending straight down to us from Jeffrey's boundless creative cosmos. Meaning, you'll get to enter into his unique world down here, live, where musical crossroads have met , dare we say, getting closer to forever?
