oh what a night...
Jagwa Music (TZ)
Oh boy! you're in for the musical monsoon of this summer season and it's splashing on to our outdoor stage with tumultuous force.
Writes a fan: «Two Tone meets Prog Rock and a searing Jazz sax. And the best pelvis since Elvis.» We must notify Hank the Handsome Horny Heron of this, but we're getting ahead of ourselves just now. Jagwa Music is a wild and crazy bunch of charmers from Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. They're hugely popular in their hometown and the cab drivers there even painted their lyrics on to their vehicles to put even more move on to their raw poetry. Theirs is a style born in the streets of this glowing city and it's called Mchiriku. Moreover, at it's core is a driving force of all-out ecstatic erotic energy that will seriously affect your sensory system. And what one of the dancers does to the floor of the stage, the floor will never forget and neither will you.
There are eight members to this World-music sensation, their sound is a mix of dizzying, interlocking and complex percussion rhythms, performed with astonishing skill and at breathtaking  speed. And it's all even more motored on by a powerful bass played with such force it can generate a monsoon. Crisscrossing these intricately woven sound patterns is the disrespectful, shredding sound of a vintage Casio while their singer and MC bellows and raps about survival in the urban chaos, about the ever-present shamans and about two-timing lovers in the steamy African night. Add the two dancers swooshing and slamming and hip- and butt-jiggling across the stage and it'll strike you as funny that Dar-es-Salaam means «Abode of Peace». (No matter, it’s the kind of peace we like).
Their debut «Bongo Hotheads» came out on the legendary label Crammed Discs and as we warned you previously, it will seriously electrify your mind, limbs and loin. What we now need is a blitzy blue sky for this outdoor show and perhaps you'll get an answer to «What will wake up the sexiest part of my body?»
