A musical force of nature

oh what a night...
Oldseed (CAN)
It’s the summer of 2003 and Craig Bjerring, currently known as Oldseed, notices that the band Smog is playing in his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada and he contacts the promoter of the show and asks: «Can I get on the bill?!» The promoter says he needs to hear some music. Ok, Craig says, he'll write and make some and he quickly records five songs and gets the gig.
And thus began one of the more prolific careers of a singer/songwriter who's now well known in the trade and by fans all over Europe. For instance in 2010, after civilising the West, he went on to touring the Wild East like Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. And in there somewhere, at some time and place, he was opening for the great Howe Gelb. While also opening his own bar in Kassel, Germany, jawoll, but that's a whole other tale...

Nevertheless, we're sure his notoriety is all due entirely to his unique no-bullshit approach to writing and music making. In fact, in the vast and lukewarm sea of contemporary songwriting, his approach and style stick out like the fin of a great white shark.

Just listen to his latest release, «SimpleTales Of Morality». It'll strike you that his art is very personal, sometimes ghostly and fragile and permeated with compositions and sound constructions that seduce softly to begin and then can culminate in unabashed, even explosive and gloriously beautiful expressions of anger.

Hairraising, if not heartbreaking, Craig Bjerring is simply a musical force of nature. Yet he's at ease on stage and like any great performer, knows when to take himself seriously and when not to. Something anybody wanting to change the world should appreciate.
