oh what a night...
Dan Stuart (USA)
Born in Los Angeles in 1961, Dan Stuart was leader of the legendary post-punk, alt-country-rock Green On Red, which was also manned by Chuck Prophet and Chris Cacavas. Later, together with Steve Wynn, he founded the equally legendary duo Danny & Dusty. He's now celebrating his newest reincarnation from the tomb of the living dead legends with a grandiose solo debut, «The Deliverance Of Marlowe Billings» (Cadiz Records, 2012). It's an homage to a character who lives in the South of Mexico, based on a story by cult author B. Traven.
Dan Stuart, Señor Stuart or Marlow Billings, call him what you will, is back - and how: He orchestrated his own resurrection all by himself and started up the arduous and chaotic process with last year's 4-song EP. As before and as always, others are listening intently: His world-famous songs have been covered by the likes of Manic Street Preachers, Richmond Fontaine, John Dee Graham and the Vivian Girls. And he's living the myth he's created: Señor Stuart lives as Marlowe Billings in Southern Mexico; Señor Stuart, it was more than rumored, prior escaped from a New York mental ward; Señor Stuart was also seen all over el mundo entero, performing. Mira, milagros never cease to exist, not in any neck of the woods and never not when they're desperately needed.
Rewind back a few fast years, it was then when Green on Red lit a fire under el culo of the music world, equaled in it's generated heat only by Rain Parade and The Dream Syndicate, if at all. After six GOR albums, Señor Stuart concentrated mainly on playing golf, which struck him as a somewhat cheaper and healthier pastime than doing drugs. 1995 saw a solo effort, «Can O' Worms», than silence, zero, nada. Tragically, after a few GOR reunion concerts, drummer Alex MacNicol died which, also sadly, meant the end of further recordings by GOR. Nevertheless, Señor Stuart began writing songs again. And he got a lucky break, so to speak, when Steve Wynn broke an ankle and his relative immobility led to
the creation of another studio album by Danny & Dusty - their first in 25 years. Muy comico tambien, here's a band that doesn't care for it's name: Like they forgot why Steve's called Dusty and you can't call Dan «Danny», unless you wanna risk a straight right into the kisser. Might try Señor Danny, just to soften the blow...
«Just to wake up interested. That's the key. Oaxaca makes it easy....» No milagro necessary.
