oh what a night...
Joe d'Urso (USA)
His music is traditional rock'n'roll but while remaining unpretentious it's elevated by his poetry and brought close to home with topical lyrics.
Once again, this dancing bear is leaving his cave and is embracing us with his considerable natural force. He's been visiting our zoo time and time again, one show more memorable than the previous and he no doubt will leave us behind in the dust again, desperately trying to catch our breath. He's a New York animal but still very much a mensch, long time ago he stepped out of the nurturing shadows of Wilco, The Allman Brothers and Bruce «The Boss» Springsteen. Ever since his first band name «3 Chords and the Truth to Stone Caravan» (an American/Jersey Shore/Rock'n'Roll band) Huh? If you're interested, «Jersey Shore», next to a popular beach, is a current reality tv show that features mostly Italo-Americans, notably the, uh, bootylicious Snooki, she of the humongous bazookies, currently preggers. It's been rumoured the disrespectful going-ons in this intellectual masterpiece has even compelled some of the Sopranos to migrate back to Catania. That's them but we venture to say that Joe d'Urso and his band are almost as universally accepted as Tony and his familia and while performing over time in thousand of global venues, he's gathered up an impressive international family of fans of his own since his 1991 debut «45-10 Parson». If you're not in already what might possibly compel you to join? Might be the hats-off to the music of Mellencamp, Springsteen, Dylan, Tom Petty, Southside Johnny, Bob Seger, Wilco, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, you get the idea. If that makes you yawn, how about his deceptively simple credo «All I have is three chords, the truth and a red guitar.» Yeah, right.
But live and on stage is where this understatement becomes exeedingly clear and it's where he'll really grab you by the lapel and elsewhere and surprise you with his hellish songs performed with an angels voice, music that laps at you, flowing, loose and lucid and then comes at you like a straight right: heavy, powerful and rocking you and the ground you're standing on. Of course we especially love the title of his cd «Down Here By The River» ('cause that's where we want to seeee youuuu!), all 14 songs of it, including 11 that Joe wrote plus one each by Marah («Round Eye Blues»), Stevie Van Zandt («All I Needed Was You»), BoDean's («Angels») and one co-written by a childhood buddy of his («LaGuardia to Weehawken»). It's about that plane piloted by Solly Sollenberger that was miraculously landed in the Hudson. His music is traditional rock'n'roll but while remaining unpretentious it's elevated by his poetry and brought close to home with topical lyrics. (Home is where the heart is, dig?) Lyrics that let you know about his strong belief in extending a helping paw to those less fortunate, all 3 billions of them, and to people suffering from Parkinson's and breast cancer.
So, all you cuddly teddy bears out there, kick out the jams and leave your cave and roll on in for a rockin' rollickin' good night out, it'll do you a bearish ton of good. Joe d'Urso and his music are expecting you and will embrace you with the kind of hug only a great big dancing bear can give.
