two-step big beat gospel

oh what a night...
Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside (USA)
Bridging vintage and modern, their sound has alternatively been labelled «two-step big beat gospel» or «raw soul high energy rockabilly».
Sorry, if you couldn't make it to the June 14-16 Azkena Rock Festival in Spain's Basque country and missed out on Lynard Skynard, My Morning Jacket, Blue Oyster Cult, Drop Dead Murphy's a.o. But we can offer you a hot new group from Portland, Oregon that also performed during the festival together with its rather illustrious company: Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside.
Bridging vintage and modern, their sound has alternatively been labelled «two-step big beat gospel» or «raw soul high energy rockabilly».
Be that as it may, it achieves another feat for sure: It sets the stage for Sallie Ford, who's voice has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and shouters like Bessie Smith. She herself has cited influences like Cat Power and Tom Waits (Girl....!). And it is her voice that puts her into a sphere all of her own: Cocky but emotional, honest and direct - enough said. Her bandmates are long-time friends who were actually gutting fish for a living when the band was formed in artsy Portland and they are Jeffrey Munger (g), Tyler Tornfelt (b) and Fort Tennis (d). A big fan is Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers who toured with SFTSO and who's gushing with praise: «Sallie's songs present us with this rare quality that happily mixes fun and seriousness, while still maintaining artistic integrity. She effortlessly works the room and reminds us of and brings back the energy of  early Rock'n'Roll.» Uh-hu. And so went Little Richard in 1956 and The Beatles in 1964:
«Well, long tall Sally
she's built for speed
she got everything
Uncle John could ever need
(We're gonna have
some fun tonight)»
Our Sally isn't really that tall but otherwise she's got and delivers everything Uncle Joe and you and I would ever need. Ever.
