oh what a night...
Delaney Davidson (NZ)
Actually, the gentleman in question is a Kiwi. (We didn't know they roamed this far.) Here's what he has to say for himself:
Thanks to a bit of luck (and ours), Delaney came back on track, blessing the world with his unique brand of music all along the way. Joining up with different bands, among them our beloved Dead Brothers. Company that's been pushing him on and higher and higher. But wait ! because now this bird is back on his own again, supported by his imaginary orchestra and his whisky soaked songs which, it's rumoured, he carries with him and pulls out of his derelict suitcase.
Earlier, while working as a cook at the Kairo in Bern, our guy, married now, bumped into Reverend Beat-Man, he of the Voodoo Rhythm label fame.
Two albums later, while with the Dead Brothers and after extensive touring in Europe and the U.S., he finally arrived to where he is today: seriously having laid down his ideas on to the tracks of a solo album.
Called «Self-Decapitation». (What's that we're hearing? Has to be applause...) The best remembered song is «Magpie Song» which, like all the songs , dignifies itself through easy, memorable, up and happy, danceable music. Featuring Low-Fi and lots of rousing brass backing. And among his side men you'll hear the revered Reverend Beat-Man, preaching on guitar. Perhaps at least a touch responsible with injecting ominous and eerie voodoo rhythms throughout the 11 loony tunes.
But there's also tradition and ambiance at play here, invoking country fairs and the old-time circus. Nostalgic yes, but always lifted by a Django Reinhardt-like, timeless jazzy feeling.
So come on over on the 5th, set sail and cross the Sihl Strait in a whisky barrel and listen to that funny bird. But be prepared to lose your mind. If not your head.
